Speaker Bios:
- Milfred Hammerbacher – CEO & President, Canadian Solar - With over 20 years of photovoltaic experience, Milfred has
managed companies in four countries. Most recently, he spent 12 months in an executive consulting role in China on
behalf of our parent company, Canadian Solar Inc. Before that, he was President of SSP Inc. and Assistant General
Manager of Photowatt International. Milfred has a diverse business and technical background.
- Jason Hammond - President, Grand River CarShare - Jason Hammond has been a sustainable transportation advocate since
founding RADIUS (Reducing Automobile Dependence In University Students) at the University of Waterloo, where he also led the Climate Change Education and
Awareness Campaign. An active member of the Canadian Urban Transit Association, Jason has graduated from their Transit Planning course. In the political
realm, Jason was the two-term founding co-chair of the Young Greens of Canada, was a candidate in the 2006 Regional Council elections in the City of
Kitchener, and represents members in the Horseshoe Region for the Green Party of Ontario. Jason is the President of Grand River CarShare and Hamilton
CarShare.
- Kathleen Barsoum, Promotion and Education Co-ordinator, Region of Waterloo, Transportation and Environmental Services - Waste
Management Division - Kathleen studied business at Laurier and worked as an invention analyst, assessing new technologies and developing
commercialization strategies to market, many of these in the environmental sector. A change of career brought her to the Region of Waterloo,
Waste Management as Promotion and Education Coordinator where one of her tasks was to expand the public education program with the design an
Environmental Education Centre. Using an enthusiastic approach and ‘reuse and recycle’ philosophy, the goal is to spark students to understand how
local waste decisions impact the global environment. The education program attracted over 5,000 primary to university level students last school
year, including the Re-Think Waterloo student teams.
- Dan Meagher, Communications Coordinator, Water Efficiency,Region of Waterloo, Transportation and Environmental Services -
Water Services - Dan has spent the last 5 years as a project manager and communications representative for Water Services with the Region of
Waterloo. His role includes public education, delivery of school programming, conservation project management and event planning.
- Julian van Mossel, Residential Energy Efficiency Project (REEP) - Julian has worked with REEP since 2007
promoting energy conservation and sustainable living throughout Waterloo Region. Julian lived in Zambia and Botswana for most of his
childhood. He has a degree in environmental studies from the University of Waterloo and has called Kitchener his home for the past 11
years. He is now the proud owner of a 1920s home near downtown Kitchener.
- Gerald van Decker, President & CEO, Power-Pipe - RenewABILITY Energy Inc. - Gerald is the President and
CEO of RenewABILITY Energy Inc. based in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. Prior to starting the company in July 2000, Gerald was employed by
Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) working in project management and R&D activities in Active Solar Technologies. Gerald holds a Master's
Degree in Mechanical Engineering and Bachelor's Degree in Systems Design Engineering both from the University of Waterloo. His broad
background has been a great asset for the business over the years. Gerald is the inventor of the Power-Pipe® and the key driver for
the expansion of the Drain Water Heat Recovery market within North America. His vision includes rapid yet sustained adoption of the
Power-Pipe® across North America and around the world.
- Krista Long, Perth-Waterloo-Wellington chapter of Canadian Organic Growers
- Krista is an environmental designer and educator, organic food advocate, backyard gardener, yoga enthusiast and
homeschooling mother of two. She has worked with Evergreen’s Learning Grounds program and coordinated the Jane Goodall Institute’s
Roots & Shoots program prior to working with COG.
